Public Comments

The initial focus of IUGLS is whether possible physical changes in the St. Clair River and other factors are contributing to near record low levels in the upper Great Lakes. More broadly, the Study is examining whether regulation of outflows from Lake Superior might be improved to take into consideration changing climate and evolving interests of property owners, ecosystems, local governments, the shipping sector, and the recreational boating and tourism industry.

In addition to public meetings being held throughout the Upper Great Lakes, this comment area is an opportunity for the interested public to express their views regarding the impacts of changing Great Lakes water levels. Ultimately, this U.S.- Canada study will make recommendations for possible improvements to the regulation plan for outflows from Lake Superior down the St. Marys River. Clearly, any change to the regulation plan will have impacts both in Lake Superior and downstream. Study experts will take the values and information provided by the public and input them into our models in order to develop criteria by which they compare and judge alternative regulation plans.

Thanks for your comment and for playing a role in this project that is so important to the future health of the Great Lakes and all living things who make the lakes their home!
