John Kangas is a senior hydraulic
engineer in the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. He
was appointed U.S. Secretary of the International Lake
Superior, Niagara, and
International St. Lawrence River Boards of Control in August
1993. He provides staff support to the Division Commander,
who is the US Chairman of
the IJC’s three Great Lakes Control Boards.
Prior to his appointment as US Secretary, he provided
staff support to the Control Boards since 1978, and has
participated on several IJC studies.
This included membership on the Coastal Zone
Subcommittee of the International Lake Erie Regulation
Study. The
Subcommittee looked at Great Lakes-wide flooding and erosion
impacts of several proposed regulation plans, as well as the
impacts of potential changes in water diversions for the
Great Lakes Diversions and Consumptive Uses Study.
He is the US Chair of the Coordinating Committee on
Great Lakes Basic Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data.
