John Jackson

John is Program Director for Great Lakes United, with prime responsibility for toxic substances, the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, LaMPs and RAPs, and water levels and flows. He was a board member of Great Lakes United from 1983-2007, including six years as president.

John’s other work includes or has included:

  • Waste Management Lecturer, Environment and Resource Studies Program, 3rd year course, Trent University (1996-present);
  • Ontario’s Environmental Appeal Board (1992-1997);
  • Advisory Committee for Great Lakes Living Systems audit, for Office of the Auditor General of Canada (2006-present) and 2001 Great Lakes audit;
  • Researcher-writer-organizer, Status of Remedial Action Plans in Ontario, for Ontario Public Advisory Committee, (2005-2006);
  • Researcher-writer, Community Right-to-Know, Toronto Public Health (2005-2006);
  • Researcher-Writer for Lee Botts & Paul Muldoon for Evolution of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

John has served on or currently serves on numerous committees related to Great Lakes issues. These include: Great Lakes Charter Annex Advisory Panel, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources; Great Lakes Innovation Committee, appointed by Environment Canada and Ontario Ministry of the Environment; Environment Canada’s Great Lakes Advisory Committee; Advisor to Great Lakes Fishery Commission; IJC’s Great Lakes Binational Toxics Strategy Progress Review Work Group; Lake Superior Forum; Advisory Committee to Health Canada’s Great Lakes Health Effects Program; St. Clair River Binational Public Advisory Council; official observer to 1987 negotiation on the GLWQA appointed by Joe Clark.

John has numerous publications on Great Lakes issues and on the public role in policy and decision-making.
