David L. Powers is a practicing attorney in Bay City, Michigan with the firm of Smith, Martin, Powers & Knier, P.C. His legal work includes three published articles and ten published cases in state and federal courts. Dave co-founded and served as Vice President of Save Our Shoreline, a 3,200-member organization of Great Lakes property owners. He also served as president of the Bay County Bar Association; former chairman of the Bay City Downtown Management Board; and board member of the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. In his role with Save Our Shoreline, Dave helped negotiate passage of Michigan’s Beach Grooming Law, 2003 PA 14, and helped raise awareness of the proliferation of phragmites, a non-native, invasive plant, along the shores of Saginaw Bay and western Lake Huron. He was also lead counsel for the property owners’ position in the widely publicized case of Glass v Goeckel, 473 Mich 667 (2005), involving the extent of riparian and public rights along Michigan’s Great Lakes shoreline. Dave is listed in “Who’s Who in American Law” and “Who’s Who in the World.” In 2006, he was named “Super Lawyer” by Law & Politics Magazine, and in 2009, he was identified as a “Leader in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly newspaper. He resides with his wife and two boys on the shore of Saginaw Bay.
