Recreational Boating, Tourism & Cruise Ships Technical Working Group

This Technical Working Group (TWG) is assessing the effects of alternative regulation plans on recreational boating and tourism in the upper Great Lakes and will make recommendations for potential improvements to regulation plans to benefit this interest. With an estimated two million boats registered in the U.S. and Canada that are used on the Great Lakes, changing water levels have both indirect and direct impacts on this vitally important driver of the Great Lakes economy. For example, low levels can damage boats, docks and seawalls and reduce accessibility – increasing costs to marina operators while reducing income from boat owners. At the same time, high water reduces beachfront acreage and can also cause the lost of boat use and related tourism spending. By analyzing both available data and collecting new information through surveys of boat owners, marinas, charter boats operators and other water-dependent tourism businesses – including sport and commercial fishing – this TWG will integrate this information to report on the size and economic importance of this sector and its relationship to water levels in the upper Great Lakes.
